Now, just as we need to forgive those who have hurt us, we must also forgive ourselves for the hurts we have caused. We have all made mistakes. We have all missed opportunities. We have all said or done something hurtful, or not said or not done what we should have, at different points in our lives. But we are not our mistakes and our shortcomings. We can choose to believe the lie that we are the sum of our failures and accomplishments, or we can believe the truth that we are much, much more.

When possible, it’s important to express an apology and make amends to those we have hurt, so that we can assist in their healing process. If it isn’t possible or won’t be helpful to apologize in person—for example, perhaps the injured party is deceased or maybe an apology would cause even more hurt and disruption for the person—then we can do so by thought, sending our apology, healing, and love. Most importantly, we need to learn from our mistakes so that we continue to become the kinder, gentler, more loving souls we are meant to be. We can honor the people who have been our teachers, thank the Universe for our lessons, and forgive others and ourselves. We choose to love ourselves, so we can move forward in love and service to others.

Whether we are forgiving ourselves or others, there are a few tools that can be effective in facilitating this process. Two of these include a forgiveness meditation and a forgiveness letter, shown here. Before you begin this or any meditation, please be sure to do your surround, ground, and shield exercises (chapter 5).
